So I ended up with 6 mascara samples through my Ipsy Glam Bags, samples and 100 point perks from Sephora. And the thought struck that it would be a perfect time to have a “battle of the mascaras”. I could try out all 6, observe and take notes and then share my findings with you. I assigned a grade to each mascara to help clearly convey my rating.
I passionately love mascara and am always on the hunt for the latest and greatest. I always want my lashes to be noticeable. That being said, my standards for mascaras are high. I want volume, length and definition. I also want staying power and no flaking. It doesn’t hurt if they’re touchable after the mascara is applied either.
I think it’s important to note that mascara is a very individualized product, meaning that we all want certain things from a mascara and they can vary. So the mascara one person can’t live without may be just ‘meh’ to another. These are only my opinions. If one of mascaras that didn’t work for me is your fave, that’s okay! Keep using what works for you!
I wore the same lash primer under each of these mascaras so that it would be a ‘fair’ test. So here’re my findings:
Buxom Lash Mascara- I had really high expectations for this mascara. It came highly recommended to me by a friend that’s absolutely beautiful, complete with amazing lashes. But this was another example of what mascara works well for one may not work for another. I did like the wand -I tend to prefer plastic wands but it just didn’t bulk up like I wanted it to. I could get a nice look out of it but I had to really work at it, as in layering on 4-5 coats rather than my normal 3. GRADE: C.
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara: This isn’t my first time trying this mascara. I know it doesn’t work for me yet hope springs eternal. I keep thinking surely I can make it work but I just can’t! 😦 It transfers on me and doesn’t give me the fabulous dramatic impact I expect from a mascara. It works well for so many people but sadly, I’m not one of them. My daughter looks like a mascara model with this mascara, though. It’s definitely one that has a fan club so be sure to try it for yourself. GRADE: C+
The Balm Mad Lash: This one came in second of the six I tried. I liked the curved, plastic brush and it was very buildable. It worked okay for me. It didn’t measure up to my top 2 favorite mascaras ever but it did a good job. GRADE: B
MAC False Lashes Extreme: I don’t understand how a company that makes such fabulously amazing lipsticks can be such a failure at mascaras. I’ve yet to find a MAC mascara that I like. This mascara was wimpy, wimpy, wimpy. No matter how I tried, I could not build it up. GRADE: D-
Benefit They’re Real: This was my favorite mascara of the bunch. It gives dramatic impact, I love the wand and I honestly look like I’m wearing false lashes when I’m not. I get tons of compliments when I wear this. There’s only one problem. It dries out so quickly no matter how careful I am to keep it tightly closed. I’ve had this issue with this mascara each time I’ve used it. Because of that, I have to lower my grade from an A to an A-. GRADE: A-
MAC Extreme Dimension 3D Lash: Another wimpy mascara from MAC. I wish their mascaras worked for me but it’s just not meant to be. I just couldn’t get any power from this mascara. GRADE: D
Now it’s your turn. I’d absolutely love for you to share your favorite mascaras with me!
